Bio
Nella is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and producer. Blending their musical roots in folk, jazz, and classical with contemporary improvisations and electronics, they cultivate a sound that bridges genres. Performing with a 5-string electric violin, drum machine, and loop pedal, Nella sculpts ambient orchestral landscapes of violin, synth, and electronic drums in which their ethereal vocals roam.
Deeply inspired by downtempo ambient-leaning electronic music, Nella weaves field recordings and organic sounds into the fabric of their production to build layered and airy orchestral atmospheres, transmuting their roots and sculpting new worlds with their music. This metamorphosis of sound brings listeners to a place found somewhere between a memory and a dream. Light leaks into their arrangements as they bring together a genre-bending blend of avant-garde instrumentation, percussive rhythm, and soft vocal song.
Raised in the small northern community of Smithers on the traditional unceded territories of the Wet'suwet'en, Nella found their roots in fiddling and folk music. Nella was mentored at a young age by the late Oliver Schroer, currently playing one of his 5-string violins, his unique influence shows in their distinctive playing style. Nella currently resides in the Kootenays on the stolen and unceded traditional territories of the Ktunaxa, Sinixt, and Sylix peoples, where they majored in violin and composition at the Contemporary Music and Technology program at Selkirk College.
